Google: Research firms evaluate Google's Android Project - Chances for SMEs seen
Research firms Gartner, Ovum, Current Analysis and Forrester recently evaluated the chances and benefits or Google's Android platform and the Open Handset Alliance (OHA) initiative. Overall evaluations are positive.
The telco landscape is full of stumbling initiatives for standardization and other purposes such as LiMO, Open Mobile Terminal Platform, Open Mobile Alliance, Gnome Mobile and Embedded Initiative and many others. But Google as a whale could succeed with it's Android platform. Most market research firms confirm that there's the chance for success on the long run however.
Through Android various parties could benefit: Mobile users can use features beyons calls and SMS only within the same network. Using Android this could change. Gmail and Google Maps proved that lean applications may work great on a mobile device. Youtube on an iPhone is another proof. For enterprises, the Android-Stack offers the opportunity to realize a bunch of business ideas independent from carriers. This is by far contrary to the current situation in Japan, Europe and especially in the US. Cell phone producers could reduce their software development costs. No more licences were needed for Windows Mobile or Symbian and also development costs for customization and optimization were reduced or cut off. The Android stack would offer the opportunity of application development even for very small development companies and single developers and independent from Microsoft, Nokia und Apple. Carriers could increase their networks value. It was muh easier for mobile phone users to access the internet and probably usage of mobile internet applications from there will increase. Carriers even could participate at advertising sales from content partners or Google.
Google itself finally will benefit through displaying services and advertisements on mobile devices.
